Somatic Exercises What are somatic exercises Somatic exercises refers to the release of muscular tension through gentle, unintentional movement and an awareness of your body. How do your muscles feel in various positions and movements? How do YOU feel in various positions and movements? How it works Somatic exercises are based on pandiculation, which means the involuntary, instinctive stretching of soft tissue, particularly during transitions between cyclic biological behaviors. What that means is it’s the unconscious contracting and releasing of muscles that happen during regular movements. You have to tune in to how your muscles feel in every movement and moment. The key is to feel the stretching and tension in your muscles that we’ve been conditioned to ignore (called interoception). Types There are many different somatic exercises that you can do....

What is ableism? Ableism is discrimination and social prejudice in favor of able-bodied people, based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. (Able-bodied people are those without a disability). Types of Intimacy

What is intimacy? Intimacy is the feeling of closeness and interconnectedness with another person. It is a foundation for a long and healthy relationship, whether that be romantic or platonic.  Physical intimacy Physical intimacy is about creating feelings of closeness and connection using physical touch. This can include: sex, kissing, hugging, cuddling, holding hands, etc. This kind of touch releases oxytocin in the brain, the “happy” chemical.  Emotional Intimacy Emotional intimacy is candid sharing of thoughts and feelings. It is the ability to tell someone your deepest fears and dreams, and feeling understood when you do. This creates a “safe space” for difficult emotions to arise. Overstimulation

What is overstimulation? Overstimulation, sometimes called “sensory overload,” is when your brain has too much stimuli, making it hard to process any new information. Typically, this is seen in highly sensitive people (HSP), autistic folks, folks with anxiety, and folks with ADHD. Essentially, your brain feels trapped by the high volumes of input it’s picking up on. Your body begins to panic in a bid to try to protect you from overwhelming stimuli.  What are the signs of overstimulation?
