Christian Billalba, MFT (he/him) is a pre-licensed Marriage and Family Therapy clinician with a Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University. He works with individuals, couples, and families navigating relationship stress, life transitions, cultural issues, and concerns related to sex and intimacy.
He believes that many of the difficulties we experience develop within the context of our relationships and the larger systems in which we live. Rather than viewing problems as residing solely within an individual, he works collaboratively with clients to explore the external forces that push and pull our attention, beliefs, and understandings of ourselves and others. Through this process, opportunities for change emerge and clients are supported in developing new perspectives, strengthening relationships, and moving toward lives that feel more authentic and fulfilling.
His presence in the room is warm, collaborative, and direct. He strives to create a therapeutic space where people feel safe bringing their full selves into the room. He believes that meaningful change often occurs through paying attention to the here and now and slowing down to explore emotions, thoughts, and relational experiences as they unfold. By increasing awareness of sensations, feelings, and patterns, clients can develop greater emotional regulation, self-understanding, and more intentional ways of relating to themselves and others.
Christian is a first-generation Latino American with ADHD and brings those lived experiences alongside his clinical training into his work as a therapist.
Outside of therapy, Christian enjoys camping, hiking, and reorganizing his Pokémon cards for the millionth time. He likes to watch the Birds alone so he can yell without judgment, and he can’t go to the movies without eating enough popcorn to give himself a stomachache.
As a systemic therapist, Christian believes it is essential to consider and discuss the ways patriarchal, white supremacist, cisheteronormative, and neurotypical ideals influence our relationships, opportunities, and experiences of ourselves and others. Through these conversations, Christian encourages clients to think critically about the messages they have received, the opportunities and barriers they have encountered, and how those experiences continue to influence how they relate to themselves and the people around them.
